The Guild book group will discuss Mr. Jefferson's Lost Cause: Land, Farmers, Slavery, and the Louisiana Purchase (2003), by Roger Kennedy.

One book reviewer summarized the book as follows: “This book examines the gap between Jefferson's claims that he favored a republic of small farmers and the actual policies which he promoted. The book shows that the Louisiana Purchase, due to Jefferson's policies, led to the growth of slavery. The author examines the great financial interests that vanquished slavery's many opponents in the South. The book focuses on the ambitions of Thomas Jefferson and the betrayal of his stated hopes.”

The book is available in paperback and in Kindle. Our discussion will be teleconferenced for members who are unable too attend the meeting in person.

If you have read the book or will have read the book by September 13, 2017 and plan to attend please register. All Guild members are invited to read the book and attend our lively educational meetings.
